Nyboder -
yellow-orange houses in the centre of Copenhagen
Nyboder is an old residential area near Østerport in Copenhagen. These are characteristic yellow-orange houses in the centre of the city. Fantastic place for atmospheric photos with a great background.
Short history
King Christian IV of Denmark wanted to build housing for sailors of the Danish fleet. He believed that naval crews were better off staying close to ships, where they could be called quickly unless they were scattered throughout the city.
Additionally, the idea of a special community for Navy personnel is that families can help each other when the men are away.
For practical reasons, the rest of Copenhagen in the 17th century had not yet used a fully uniform Nyboder house number. The numbers are consecutive, so the traditional system of even numbers on the right and odd numbers on the left of the road doesn’t apply here.
The community was originally known as De nye “bådsmandsboder” -new boatman houses/sheds, but soon became to “Nyboder” -New small Houses/Sheds.
